Park Open Studio: Connective Tissue - A Mixed Media Workshop Series with Annie Legnini

Led by a local teaching artist, this drop-in class invites participants to explore creativity through hands-on artmaking under the shade of Scrabble Plaza’s trees. Past mediums have included plein-air drawing, printmaking, cyanotypes, and more. All materials are provided by WSPC.

About the Workshop

Connective Tissue - A Mixed Media Workshop Series

Week 1, Class 1: Witness of the World – Create a mixed media work of the Washington Square Park (WSP) environment, objects, animals, and people from life on one page

Week 1, Class 2: Among the World, of the World – Create a mixed media work of the WSP environment, objects, animals, people, and yourself, including additional selected prompts such as drawing something patterned, natural, rough, and more.

Week 2, Class 3: Portraits of You, of Me – Create a mixed media portrait of yourself (from a mirror) or a friend/another participant of the workshop.

Week 2, Class 4: Expressions of Us, Here and There – Create at least two or more mixed media portraits of a friend/another participant of the workshop in the same drawing, focusing on expressiveness.

Week 3, Class 5: Mosaic of Texture – Create an abstract mixed media work that uses a variety of textures inspired by the space of Washington Square Park (foliage, concrete, animal fur, and more).

Week 3, Class 6: Connective Tissue — Create a mixed media work that depicts interactions between the natural world and people.

Week 4, Class 7: Seeing My Neighbor: (Part 1) – Inspired by the Bronx Faces portraiture series, interview a friend, a participant, or yourself; Create a mixed media portrait based on the responses (this may be broken up into two classes or completed in one).

Week 4, Class 8: Seeing My Neighbor: (Part 2) – Inspired by the Bronx Faces portraiture series, interview a friend, a participant, or yourself; Create a mixed media portrait based on the responses (you may continue work from the previous day or start a new, single-session artwork).

About the Artist

Antoinette “Annie" Legnini (b. 1994, The Bronx) is a painter and draftsperson working with mixed media, collage, assemblage, and installation. She received a B.A. from Fordham University in Visual Arts and Women’s Studies in 2016 and an M.F.A. in Painting at the New York Academy of Art in 2022.

Legnini has participated in residencies at the Washington Square Park Conservancy, the BX Arts Factory, Otis College of Art and Design, and Con Artist Collective. Legnini is best known for her ongoing collaborative community art project called “Bronx Faces” - a series that pairs the stories and experiences of Bronxites with a mixed media portrait. www.legniniart.com
